Record donation for health charity

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Calvert Healthcare Solutions, a charity providing subsidized health services to the uninsured, received a $25,000 donation Tuesday, June 2.

Dominion Energy, owner of the Dominion Cove Point liquefied natural gas plant in Lusby, announced the contribution at the meeting of the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners.

The money comes from the Dominion Fund, the corporation's charitable arm.

Mike Frederick, director of LNG operations at the plant, said the donation comes as Dominion shifts its charitable giving to local causes as a response to the recession.

"We appreciate what Dominion has been doing over the years in terms of contributions to the community and this is another instance of this," said commissioners' President Wilson Parran (D).

Jon Frank, outgoing president of CHS, said, "What a pleasant surprise it was to hear of the Dominion Foundation's gift. … Dominion's gift to us is the largest gift we have received to date," he said, excluding grants.

"I can honestly say the future of this organization is the brightest since its inception. A couple of years ago, we were honestly wondering if this organization could sustain itself, primarily because of lack of funds," said Jim Xinis, president and CEO of Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick and a CHS board member.
