An 81-year-old Dunkirk man died as the result of a single-vehicle crash on Monday in Anne Arundel County after his car went off the road and ejected him from his vehicle, according to the county's police department.

Horace M. Adams of Dunkirk was traveling south on Southern Maryland Boulevard near Plummer Lane in Lothian when his vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason, and struck a guardrail then reentered the roadway, where he was ejected from the passenger side of the vehicle, the police report stated.

The vehicle continued driverless through the median and back across the southbound lanes of Southern Maryland Boulevard where it came to rest in the trees off of the right side of the roadway around 11:30 a.m.

Adams was transported by ambulance to Calvert Memorial Hospital and was later pronounced dead, the report stated.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department's Traffic Safety Section crash investigators were called to investigate, due to the severity of the crash.

The investigation indicated operator error as the cause of the crash, but "We do not know why it happened," said a spokesperson for the department. "He lost control of the vehicle." All fatal accident investigations are turned over the attorney general, she added.
