Ignite the Night to relight June 20

THIS ‘N' THAT

Friday, June 12, 2009

A Hollywood couple driving home with their children a little over a year ago from a Christian music festival pondered how they could get one going locally. They succeeded, with a lot of help, and they'll do it again next week.

Ignite the Night returns June 20 with a noon to 10 p.m. show at the St. Mary's fairgrounds in Leonardtown featuring the award-winning DecembeRadio band from Virginia and about a half-dozen local bands.

Vicky Bailey said she and her husband, Mike, serve as co-coordinators for the event, with strong support from the local community. They sent a letter to local churches when they got the idea, and the turnout at the meetings that followed made possible the debut event attended by between 800 and 1,000 people. "Our church couldn't do it alone," she said. "We've pulled together to give something positive to the youth of Southern Maryland."

It's a free event, Bailey said, thanks to the support of local businesses donating goods, services or cash.

The headliners from Virginia play "a Southern Rock style" sound, Bailey said, but there's a diversity of styles from the local bands including Soul Soldiers, One Such Love, LifeBlood, Joe L. Da Vessel & Melodic, Scarlet Chord, God Project, Set Apart, Vision 8 and Claire and Katrina.

Jeff Weimert, the youth pastor at Shepherd's Gathering in Calvert County, will be the guest speaker. Teenagers from different churches in Southern Maryland have formed drama teams to perform theatrical presentations.

The event might target a youth audience, but it's open to families and anyone of any age. It's held before an open lawn, so bring chairs and blankets. No tents, large umbrellas or canopies will be allowed. Food vendors will be on site, making cash-only sales of meals, snacks and beverages. Alcohol will not be allowed on the premises. Crab Festival marks 23rd year on Sunday

The 23rd Annual St. Mary's County Crab Festival presented by the Leonardtown Lions Club will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday, June 14, at the fairgrounds featuring steamed hard crabs, crab soups, crab cakes and other seafood dishes. Admission is $5, and food items are sold by caterers and other vendors. Proceeds will benefit Lions Club programs. Go online to www.stmaryscrabfestival.com to learn more.

C-SPAN bus coming Tuesday to libraries

The C-SPAN Civics bus is coming to St. Mary's County next Tuesday, June 16, stopping at the Leonardtown library from 10 a.m. to noon and the Lexington Park library from 1 to 3 p.m. The public can tour the 45-foot bus and learn about its mission, funding and programs. Some residents might even be taped sharing what they are reading or plan to read this summer. Call 301-475-2846.
