Clark takes HR helm at CSM
Denise Bailey Clark was named executive director of human resources at the College of Southern Maryland, according to a CSM press release. Previously serving as the college’s executive director of diversity and equal opportunity, Clark assumed the human resources position May 26. She will continue working with the diversity and equal opportunity office on an interim basis.
‘‘I am excited about the opportunity to assist the college in providing innovative, customer-friendly human resources programs with an emphasis on work-life balance, such asÊthe summer flex time program and programs that emphasize health and wellness. In addition, we are eager toÊprovide employees with onlineÊaccess to theirÊinformation, such as with the ExPress System, new payroll adviceÊthat allows employeesÊto viewÊtheir pay information in real time,” Clark said in the release.
Working to broaden the awareness of diversity and recognize the unique contributions that individual differences provide to the community, Clark has been active with the Charles County ‘‘Unity in Community” forums since her arrival at CSM in 2006 and is the chairwoman of the Charles County Blue Ribbon Commission on Diversity and Intergroup Relations
Previously, Clark was president and diversity consultant for DBK & Associates Inc., a human resources consulting, expert witness and executive search firm where she worked with the Bureau of Census to develop its diversity program, as well as with a national recruitment center and as an expert witness for area law firms where she specialized in sexual harassment prevention. Clark was also human resources director for the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America, as well as for Lockheed Martin Information Systems where she was recipient of the President’s Excellence in Achieving Mission Success Award. She served as director of diversity programs for Kaiser Permanente and previously worked at the college as human resources administrator.
Clark received her master’s degree in human resources development from Bowie State University and her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in psychology from Towson State University. She is a certified senior professional in human resources by the Society for Human Resources Management, a certified mediator by the George Mason University⁄Northern Virginia Mediation Services, an executive coach, and a member of the Board of Resource Connections, Prince George’s chapter.
SMECO committee chooses candidates
The 2008 nominating committee for Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative met May 17 and chose candidates for the five available seats up for election on SMECO’s Board of Directors.
In addition to nominations made by the nominating committee, any 15 or more members acting together may make other nominations by petition by June 27.
Those nominated are:
Calvert County — Nancy W. Zinn.
Charles County — John H. Bloom.
Prince George’s County — Daniel W. Dyer.
St. Mary’s County — J. Douglas Frederick, Joseph V. Stone Jr. and Mary Ellen Gilbert Tancreto.
SMECO customer-members will elect five directors to serve three-year terms and will vote for one board seat in Calvert County, one seat in Charles County, one seat in Prince George’s County, and two seats in St. Mary’s County, according to a SMECO release.
Members may vote in person at the 2008 Members’ Annual Meeting on Aug. 27 at SMECO’s Hughesville headquarters. Absentee mail-in ballots are also available to members who wish to vote but cannot attend the meeting.

Dixon joinsbusiness group
Amanda M. Dixon, Manpower recruiter, has joined the Southern Maryland Business Network.
Manpower has been in business since 1948 with 4,400 offices worldwide, over 30,000 employees, and an office in Waldorf. Manpower is ranked 131st in the United States and 412th globally by Fortune magazine.
Dixon has more than five years recruiting experience and will receive a bachelor of arts in psychology in December. She is also involved in the Charles County Chamber of Commerce and in County Church.
SMBN is an independent, nonprofit, self-directed organization.
Members are dedicated to being a ‘‘virtual sales force” for other members of the group, by exchanging quality business referrals and developing new business relationships.
Meetings are held weekly from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Regency Furniture Stadium, Legends Club at 11765 St. Linus Drive, Waldorf.
