John Paul Emory IV, 10, of Prince Frederick is shown eating dinner with his family at the 2009 Calvert County Relay for Life Survivor/Warrior Celebration Dinner. Emory was diagnosed with leukemia and with three years of treatment is now cancer free. He is with his sister Christina, dad John Paul III, and mom Michele.

The community has raised funds since the first of the year culminating in tonight's Relay for Life event at Hallowing Point Park beginning at 5 p.m. and running with activities until Saturday morning.

It's a big celebration, and the community is welcome to attend and participate in the many planned games or support the fight against cancer by purchasing a meal or an item from one of the many teams.

"Come celebrate the survivors and warriors of our community and join us for the celebration. It is not too late to participate and honor or memorialize your loved ones by making a donation to our luminaria ceremony," said Paula Rosnage, Relay for Life's co-chair, in an e-mail.

One-hundred percent of the money spent on any of the fundraisers such as the moon bounce, carnival-type games, volleyball tournament, face painting and food will be donated to the cause, she said.

There will be plenty of parking, and the event is fun for all ages from kids to grandparents, said co-chair Kristin Batson.

"Our generous community has taken the fight [against] cancer very serious this year. Our teams have increased and we expect record breaking attendance again this year," Rosnage said.

Last year's 130 teams raised $461,000, honored 214 survivors and had 2,160 participants.

For 2008, Calvert was presented with the region award for largest online donations and for the largest per capita for its population category with $5.02 per county resident donated.

"Come out and join this big celebration." Rosnage said.
