Friday, June 20, 2008

An overturned candle started a house fire at 2403 Oakwood Court in Bryans Road, causing an estimated $180,000 in damage June 16, according to a Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office report.

An owner of the one-story home reported the fire to authorities at 11:11 p.m., and 50 firefighters from the Bryans Road, Potomac Heights, La Plata, 10th District and Indian Head volunteer fire departments and the Prince George’s Fire Department Station 24 responded. They extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes, but the fire had already caused about $150,000 in damage to the home and $30,000 in damage to its contents, said Deputy Fire Marshal Jeff Frye in a report.

One of the homeowners, Judith Jones, was taken to Fort Washington Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Authorities have determined a June 19 fire in a 2002 Ford Escort at Kelly Green Place in Waldorf was arson.

The car’s owner, Sheila Dandy of Waldorf, discovered the blaze and reported it at about 12:30 a.m., according to a report by Deputy State Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo.

Five firefighters from the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department responded and put out the fire within two minutes.

Minor damage was done to the paint around the fuel intake, where Zurolo reported the fire started.
