The St. Mary's River Watershed Association is seeking dock owners on the tidal St. Mary's River, St. Inigoes Creek, St. George Creek, and Carthagena Creek to participate in the Marylanders Grow Oysters project and act as caretakers for oysters in their first year of life. Cages and spat will be distributed to volunteers at no charge in August.
After a year, the oysters will be collected and placed in an oyster sanctuary on the St. Mary's River. Anyone interested in participating can contact the association at info@StMarysRiver.org. There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Mary's College of Maryland River Center at the intersection of Route 5 and Trinity Church Road.
Maryland's citizen oyster growing program involves 12 non-governmental organizations that will coordinate oyster growing efforts in 10 Maryland tributaries in 2009, including the St. Mary's, Patuxent and Wicomico rivers. The Coastal Conservation Association Maryland's Patuxent River Chapter is seeking waterfront property owners to grow oysters in creeks along the Patuxent. The chapter last year planted more than 64,000 oysters in St. Thomas and Hellen Creeks. People interested in becoming creek captains or growing oysters should contact McGuire at smcguire@gmail.com or 301-752-3623.
