Youths charged with arson

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

A joint investigation conducted by Deputy State Fire Marshals and investigators with the Calvert County Criminal Investigative Team led to the arrests of three 14-year-old boys Friday for the arson of a home in St. Leonard, a Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office press release stated.

According to the report, the juveniles have been charged with first-degree arson and fourth-degree burglary as a result of the June 16 fire occurring in the 5000 block of St. Leonard Road.

The two-story home has been vacant for approximately two years and is owned by Walter Parran. Deputy State Fire Marshals determined that two separate fires had been intentionally ignited; one in a second floor room and the other was to the back exterior wall of the home.

The fire was reported by neighbors to the Calvert County 911 Control Center. The fire brought about 30 firefighters from four county fire departments to the scene. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to control the blaze but not before an estimated $50,000 in damage was done.

Through interviews, investigators were led to the three teenagers. The youths were taken into custody on June 19 with two of the boys being released to their parents and the third youth was being held at the Cheltenham Youth Facility in Prince George's County, pending further action by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services.
