St. Leonard man charged with rape

Charging documents state victim’s drink was spiked

Friday, June 27, 2008

A 21-year-old St. Leonard man, Steven Wayne Gladhill, was indicted on rape charges recently after he allegedly gave an 18-year-old girl a spiked drink at Driftwood Beach in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates and shortly afterwards allegedly assaulted her while she lay unconscious on a broken picnic table at a Lusby residence, according to charging documents.

A friend of the victim told a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy that the victim was given a Pepsi bottle by Gladhill. The friend said that she saw the victim stumbling and acting ‘‘hyper” after drinking the contents of the bottle, the report stated. After leaving the beach around 11:30 p.m., the victim went to a residence in the 1100 block of Sandy Run Road in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates. The alleged rape occurred behind a shed at the residence around 3 a.m., charging documents state.

A witness to the alleged rape, Chris Luckett, who went to check on the victim after she went out for a cigarette and had been gone for ‘‘an unusually long period of time,” told police in an audio interview that he saw Gladhill having intercourse with the victim and ordered Gladhill to get off of the victim, who was lying underneath him, the report stated. Luckett told police that the victim was unresponsive after Gladhill got off of her and it took approximately 15 to 20 minutes to wake the victim, noting that ‘‘she appeared to be unconscious.”

The victim said that she does not recall the rape and stated that she never consented to intercourse with Gladhill, according to the report. The victim also stated in the report that throughout the night Gladhill told her that he wanted to have intercourse with her and made advances toward her, which she did not respond to and continued to back away from him.

Another witness of Gladhill’s advances, Elizabeth Monroe, said that while at the residence she overheard Gladhill telling the victim that he needed to have intercourse and that he could be trusted, the charging documents state.

Gladhill has been charged with second-degree rape, third and fourth-degree sex offense and second-degree assault, according to judicial records, and is currently incarcerated at the Calvert County Detention Center. His pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8 at 9 a.m.
