A Great Mills man shot early Monday morning outside a nightclub south of Lexington Park continued his recovery at a hospital the next day as St. Mary's detectives pursued their investigation.

The arrival of 21-year-old Jawon Nathaniel Berry at St. Mary's Hospital at about 2 a.m. Monday led to a response by law officers to its emergency room, and they learned that several gunshots had been fired as patrons were leaving Butler's Place off Route 235.

One of the rounds struck Berry in the groin, detectives report. Berry's acquaintances drove him to the hospital in Leonardtown, and he eventually was flown from there to the Washington Hospital Center.

Berry said Tuesday that he was doing "fine" at the hospital, but was uncertain when he will be released.

"I'm not sure," he said.

No arrests were reported as of midday Tuesday from the ongoing investigation, and detectives reportedly were having a difficult time cultivating witnesses to the incident. "It's one of those things where there are 60 people standing around, and nobody sees anything," St. Mary's State's Attorney Richard Fritz said from his office at the county courthouse in Leonardtown.

The preliminary investigation indicated there was only one shooter involved, the prosecutor said, and that the lone round striking Berry was the only injury.

Investigators also suggested that the attack might be related to gang activity, the prosecutor said, "but I'm not sure anybody has evidence of that."

Detectives asked that anyone with any information on the matter call them at 301-475-4200, ext. 9042, or St. Mary's Crime Solvers at 301-475-3333.
