An Indian Head fire that caused an estimated $1,000 in damage to a commercial building owned by Edgewood Management was started accidentally by a smoker, according to a report from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. A neighbor reported the blaze to authorities at 10:02 p.m. on June 25, and 25 firefighters from the Indian Head, Potomac Heights, Bryans Road and Marbury volunteer fire departments and the Naval District of Washington Fire Department responded to the scene on Jameson Court, reported Deputy State Fire Marshal John Nelson.
They put out the blaze within three minutes, confining it to the laundry room. The fire resulted from ‘‘careless smoking,” according to Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Duane K. Svites.
Candles spark fire
A fire started by scented candles caused about $300,000 in damage to a Hughesville home last Saturday, according to a report from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Fifty firefighters from the Hughesville, Waldorf and Benedict volunteer fire departments and Prince George’s Fire Department’s Station 36 controlled the fire within an hour. Authorities determined the fire began accidentally in a front bedroom when scented candles meant to clear up cat odors sparked flammable materials, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo.
