Brick home has a lot of character

Friday, July 3, 2009

I am deeply saddened that the county government would allow a developer to plow down a beautiful home to put up more chain restaurants.

The brick home at the corner of Shady Mile and Route 235 has a slate roof, copper gutters and a lot of character not found in yet another strip mall with discount stores and chain restaurants.

The home was built in the 1940s, a symbolic time in our county's history with the development of Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The county should embrace our history instead of knocking it down.

This house would have been a beautiful visitor center for the county, a doctor or lawyer's office, even retail space.

The home would also have retained its beauty and character far longer than another shopping center that in 10 to 20 years will be another eyesore in our county.

In Virginia recently an older home was going to be knocked down due to construction and instead of doing this the town chose to sell it for $1 and then have the buyer move the home at their expense.

Why couldn't St. Mary's have done something as equally creative?
