Louis "Louie" Vanek, 78, of Port Republic, formerly of Powhatan Point, Ohio, died June 26, 2009, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
He was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Moundsville, W.Va., to the late Katherine Tolza and Louis Vanek Sr.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Danford Vanek, whom he married on March 23, 1954, in Washington, D.C.; and two brothers, Joe and Donald Vanek.
He served in the U.S. Army, spending time in Germany from 1950 to 1954. When he was discharged, he had obtained the rank of sergeant.
He retired from Safeway in 1992 after 22 years of employment as a meat cutter.
He was the father of Thomas Vanek of Washington, D.C., Cynthia Vanek of Mechanicsville and Sheldon Vanek of Port Republic; and the brother of Barbra Wigley of Tennessee. He is also survived by four grandchildren.
The family received friends and a service was held July 1 at Rausch Funeral Home in Port Republic. Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Barstow.
