St. Mary's American and Baden Aquasco little leagues took to the field on Tuesday night at Robert D. Stethem Sports Complex in Waldorf in what would end up being the final game for the District 7 11- to 12-year-old All-Star Championship.
Baden needed the win to force an if' game the next night, but it was not needed as St. Mary's pulled through with an 11-1 victory in a game that lasted just four innings due to the tournament's 10-run rule.
The road to victory for St. Mary's seemed apparent, with no other team scoring runs on it. Jasmyn Olgetree pitched the first game against Northern Calvert with an 8-0 no-hitter and Jessica Miles pitched a one-hitter against Baden in a 12-0, four-inning win.
St. Mary's will head on to the state championships in Herlock, starting July 18.
"My fastball and my dropball was working for me today," Olgetree said. "One run in three games –– I think that's pretty good."
Baden had beaten Northern Calvert 7-3 and 10-0 to advance to the championship round.
"We came ready to play," St. Mary's head coach Al Olgetree said. "We decided on being the away team so we could jump out early, to try and get them down a little bit. This team has been our toughest competitor; they were the only ones to score on us. The last two teams didn't score on us. "
St. Mary's jumped out early with three runs as Baden pitcher Taylor Donaldson walked four batters, giving St. Mary's a chance to capitalize.
The second inning was also good to St. Mary's as it capitalized on two Baden errors to score three runs. St. Mary's tacked on four more runs in the fourth with a double from Olgetree and two base hits, one from Miles and one from Meaghan Redman.
St. Mary's assistant coach Sandi Caouette said that Miles and Olgetree have displayed the ability to mix their pitches up and are very "coachable."
"Our pitching staff is a cohesive unit," Caouette said. "The girls throw more than just fastballs. That last strikeout was all dropballs. All of our pitchers can bring it."
Up 7-1 in the top of the fourth, Olgetree helped her cause with a double to center field followed by a single to right from Miles, which brought Olgetree home, and another from Redman. With a full count, Rachel Buffin connected for a double to right and Miles and Redman crossed the plate, extending the lead to 10-1. Buffin stole third and home to put St. Mary's up 11-1.
St. Mary's was able to hold Baden in the bottom of the inning as Olgetree only faced four batters, striking out three, to take home the victory.
"It's a hard one to chew on," Baden head coach Cliff Donaldson said. "I had gotten a lot of 11-year-olds back. This was our first year here at majors and they made it to the final round and they never gave up. They kept slugging. They got to learn a different pace of the game."
Donaldson added, "I came up to this level a little early. It's been fun. I finally got my change-up down this season."
