Zachary Smoot receives a check from Judi Gorney, member of the Kiwanis Club of La Plata.

The Kiwanis Club of La Plata has thrown its support behind the efforts of Zachary Smoot, a Charles County resident and Clemson University student. Smoot, along with other Clemson students, will visit Uganda this year to help in the construction of a second orphanage in Turoro, Uganda.

Many of the children in the town have become orphaned because they lost their parents to AIDS.

The students are paying their own travel expenses so any financial contributions, like the one from the Kiwanis Club of La Plata, go directly to the materials for the orphanage.

The students will help supply the labor needed.

The Rev. Athanasius Kikoba of Turoro will host the students and supervise construction.
