Rear Adm. Steven R. Eastburg, NAWCAD’s commander and NAVAIR’s assistant commander for research and engineering, praised recently the Greenwell Foundation for its Vacations for Vets program.
Vacations for Vets offers disabled veterans who are currently undergoing treatment at Washington, D.C., area military hospitals the chance to spend a weekend at Greenwell’s Francis Knott Lodge with their families, away from the daily demands of recovering from injuries.
‘‘Greenwell’s Vacation for Vets program,” Eastburg said at the foundation’s annual gala in Lexington Park, ‘‘provides an important service to our nation’s injured veterans. This program is a great way to let these noble Americans and their families, all of whom have made major sacrifices, know that they have not been forgotten and are getting the services and care that they deserve.
‘‘The Greenwell Foundation,” Eastburg said, ‘‘has done an excellent job creating the Vacation for Vets program, and my hope is that many more people will give of their time and resources to help this program continue to grow.”
Greenwell hosted three recovering service members and their families during the weekend of June 20 to 22, offering them the amenities and activities Greenwell has to offer, including horseback riding, kayaking and swimming.
Volunteers and local businesses donated time, money, food and supplies for the weekend. Greenwell Foundation plans two more Vacations for Vets weekends later this year.
