ABWA was founded to help women who had entered the workforce after World War II. Each year ABWA chapters emphasize the achievement and contributions that members have made by electing a Chapter Woman of the Year.
DeGiorgi graduated from Speed Scientific School of the University of Louisville with bachelor of science and master’s of engineering degrees. She then obtained her doctoral degree in engineering mechanics from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She came to the Washington, D.C., area when she joined the Naval Research Laboratory to pursue her interest in basic research into why metals break. She is now head of the system design and integration section of the multifunctional materials branch. She has also served as a program manager at the Office of Naval Research.
DeGiorgi and her husband, Johnnie, have been involved in volunteer search and rescue since 1991.
She is involved in the training of air scenting search and rescue dogs.
