Man charged for illegal fireworks on barge

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

Bomb technicians with the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Bomb Squad have charged Jack R. Beckwith, 58, of St. Mary’s County with possession of fireworks with the intent to discharge and possession of fireworks without a permit, charges stemming from the June 28 confiscating of fireworks from a barge anchored in the Patuxent River off the Patuxent View community in Hallowing Point, according to a Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office press release.

On July 4, investigators served a District Court Criminal Summons to Beckwith, who did not have a permit for the display nor was he a licensed shooter in Maryland for the estimated $10,000 of fireworks that investigators learned were purchased from various locations in Virginia, the press release stated.

If convicted, Beckwith faces a $250 fine, the release stated.

The charge will be processed through the state’s attorney’s office and it will be heard at the Calvert County District Court, said John Nelson of the State Fire Marshal’s Office. A trial date has not been set, he said.

No other citations for illegal fireworks were given in Calvert County, but three citations for illegal fireworks were given in Charles County this past weekend, Nelson said.
