Child hit by car is seriously hurt

Friday, July 10, 2009

A 9-year-old Indian Head boy was struck by a car Wednesday evening after attempting to maneuver his bicycle around a parked ice cream truck, according to police.

The child was struck shortly before 6:50 p.m. by a Dodge Stratus traveling south in the 6900 block of Heather Drive in Bryans Road, according to a report from the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

Heather Drive sits back in a quiet development in Bryans Road with cars parked along the roadway, making for a narrow path.

Witnesses reported the child had attempted to travel around the front of a parked truck when the incident occurred.

The driver of the Stratus, a 16-year old girl, stayed at the scene, police said.

The child was flown in a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., with life threatening injuries.

According to Diane Richardson, the spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, the boy experienced severe trauma to his upper body.

Richardson said that the driver lived in the neighborhood and the boy was in the neighborhood visiting family.

She said speed does not appear to be a factor in the accident.

Richardson said she did not know the boy's condition when he arrived at the hospital.
