County is seeking citizen volunteers

Charles County residents are being sought to fill vacancies on county government boards and commissions including the housing commission, the Commission for Women, the Board of Social Services, the board of appeals, the Grants Advisory Panel, The Nuisance Abatement Board, the Homeowners’ Association Dispute Review Board and the Area Council on Aging.

There are two vacancies on the seven-member Housing Commission of Charles County, which meets the fourth Tuesday of each month to ensure the availability of safe, sanitary and decent housing for people with low and moderate incomes in Charles County.

Both vacancies are for residents to serve the unexpired five-year terms ending Oct. 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2012, respectively.

There are four vacancies on the Commission for Women, which meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the county government building in La Plata to better define and identify services needed for women of the county. Members serve four-year terms.

There is one vacancy on the Board of Social Services for an unexpired four-year term ending June 30, 2010. The Board of Social Services deals with policies, programs, and problems of the local Department of Social Services and Public Assistance Administration.

There is one vacancy for an alternate member on the board of appeals.

This alternate member will be appointed for a four-year term and will sit on the board in the absence of any member of the board.

The board of appeals hears and decides appeals and interprets the zoning laws when necessary. Meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

There is one alternate member vacancy on the seven-member⁄one-alternate member Grants Advisory Panel. The panel reviews applications for the grants awarded by the commissioners and makes recommendations to the commissioners regarding the amount and type of funding to be awarded.

There is one vacancy on the seven-member Nuisance Abatement Board, which conducts hearings pertaining to citizen complaints regarding unsightly accumulations of paper, junk, vehicle parts, trash, garbage, leaves, etc. and if more than one foot high, grass, weeds etc.

There is one vacancy on the seven-member Homeowners’ Association Dispute Review Board, which meets as needed to hear and resolve disputes between a homeowners’ association and a homeowner regarding the covenants or restrictions of the homeowners’ association. The vacancy is for a three-year term for a resident of a self-managed or professionally managed HOA within the county.
