Dog licenses are available

Licenses for dogs in St. Mary's County are required and can be purchased in the county treasurer's office in the Patuxent Building off Leonard Hall Drive in Leonardtown (301-475-4472), the animal control office in the Public Safety Building off Baldridge Street in Leonardtown (301-475-4200, ext. 2115) and also at the Tri-County Animal Shelter at 6707 Animal Shelter Road in Hughesville (301-932-1713).

Licenses can also be purchased at the Well Pet Clinic in Lexington Park (301-866-0303) and All Kinds Veterinary Hospital in Callaway (301-994-9919).

The licenses cost $2 per spayed or neutered dog for the year. It is $7.50 for an unaltered dog.

To receive the discount, residents must show written proof that their animal is spayed or neutered. A current rabies vaccination is required to obtain the license. The fee can be paid with cash, money order or check and is payable to the St. Mary's treasurer. A late fee of $2 is assessed after Sept. 1.
