Sheriff's office issues citations in motorcycle event operation

Friday, Aug. 14, 2009

In an effort to slow down motorcyclists traveling through Charles County, the Charles County Sheriff's Office issued 236 citations, 34 warnings and 10 repair orders and arrested a person for drunk driving.

Police conducted a motorcycle safety operation in Bel Alton south to Budds Creek Road on July 18 and 19 to encourage safe driving among motorcyclists traveling to and from a motorcycle festival being held at the Maryland International Raceway.

The operation was planned in response to the many reports the sheriff's office received last year of motorcycles speeding and being driven recklessly during the annual event.

"This operation slowed down the motorcyclists participating in this event, making the roads safer for themselves and for other drivers," said Charles County Sheriff Rex W. Coffey (D), in a press release.

"Our success is a testament to how skillfully our traffic operations unit handles traffic problems in our community and how dedicated they are to making potentially dangerous highway situations much safer through focused enforcement."
