Students celebrate their completion of a drug prevention seminar with officers M. Kaylor, left, D. Kabala and C. Shaw of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office juvenile intervention unit.

Saying a loud and resounding ‘‘no” to drugs, alcohol and other harmful behavior was the focus of conversation among 23 students and three Charles County sheriff’s officers at the 2008 Just Say No⁄Students Against Drunk Driving drug prevention seminar held Aug. 5 through 8 at the College of Southern Maryland, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

During the annual seminar, which is hosted by the sheriff’s office’s juvenile intervention unit, students and officers discussed prescription medicine, Internet and firearm safety, drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Students also learned about various components of the sheriff’s office during special presentations by the K-9 unit, narcotics detectives and the emergency services team.

Charles County Sheriff Rex W. Coffey (D) visited the class and presented certificates to each student who completed the program.

The students celebrated the following day at the Chesapeake Beach Water Park.

The following businesses and organizations made donations and supported the camp: Waldorf Lions Club, Greater Waldorf Jaycees, The Chemical People, Saunders Distribution, Popeye’s of La Plata, Domino’s Pizza of La Plata, Chick-fil-A of Waldorf and. Southern Maryland Signs of Indian Head.
