Water advisory issued

Friday, Aug. 31, 2007

The Charles County Department of Health issued a water advisory Wednesday for Friendship Landing in Nanjemoy Creek and Smallwood State Park at Mattawoman Creek in Marbury.

Stream samples retrieved from the locations on Monday exceeded the maximum level for enterococcus bacteria, according to health department officials.

The advisory warns residents against entering those bodies of water for recreational use.

The bacteria, present in the human intestine, can cause gastrointestinal illnesses and skin infections if the water makes contact with an opening in the skin, according to health department officials.

In addition, a water advisory remains in effect for portions of the Port Tobacco River watershed, health officials said.

The advisory — which has been in effect since 2005 — impacts a 15-square-mile area between White Plains and La Plata. The impacted areas include Wills Branch, Port Tobacco Creek and feeder streams and tributaries of those waterways.
