Former CSM bigwigsjoin ETC

Elaine Ryan, former president of the College of Southern Maryland, and Ann Smith, former dean of educational and technical development for CSM, have joined Energetics Technology Center to develop and deploy an Energetics Workforce Human Capital Development Project, according to an ETC press release.

Ryan and Smith will be ultimately responsible for developing a workforce focused on energetics technology. Their day-to-day activities will include initial data collection and analysis, assessment of important skills and current and projected skills gaps, and the development of outreach activities for elementary through college education.

‘‘The educational backgrounds and expertise of Elaine and Ann are uniquely suited to the requirements of this project,” Bob Kavetsky, CEO of the ETC, said in the release. ‘‘Now, more than ever, we are facing a critical shortage of scientists and engineers. ETC is a private, nonprofit enterprise dedicated to growing science and technology in Southern Maryland.

ETC focuses on workforce and economic development in the region and is a catalyst for energetics research and development. ETC is currently based in La Plata.

Mirant, Lafargeenter agreementon gypsum supplies

Lafarge, North America’s largest diversified supplier of construction materials, and Mirant Corp., a leading U.S.-based competitive energy company, have signed a long-term agreement under which Mirant, beginning in 2010, will supply synthetic gypsum to Lafarge’s gypsum drywall manufacturing facility in Buchanan, N.Y., according to a Lafarge press release.

Mirant will transport the synthetic gypsum to Lafarge’s Buchanan facility from its Morgantown and Chalk Point electric generating stations in Maryland.

Synthetic gypsum is a by-product created from the sulfur dioxide removal technology currently being constructed at Mirant’s Maryland power plants as part of the company’s $1.6 billion investment in air pollution control technologies.

Reflecting Lafarge’s long-standing commitment to producing ‘‘green” products, the company will invest in an upgrade of its Buchanan plant which will enable it to manufacture a full line of gypsum products using this environmentally friendly material. Upon scheduled completion in 2010, the gypsum board manufactured in this plant will exceed 99 percent recycled content by weight and qualify toward the attainment of LEED credits in the construction of ‘‘green buildings” throughout the northeastern United States.

With the addition of the Buchanan plant, nearly all of the gypsum board manufactured by Lafarge in North America will be made with 100 percent recycled paper and recycled gypsum.

Mirant owns or leases approximately 10,097 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the United States.

Poseys attend Shaklee global conference

Bertram and Margie Posey of Indian Head joined other social marketing entrepreneurs from the United States and around the world at the Shaklee global conference in New Orleans last month.

Shaklee, a natural nutrition company, holds the conference annually to recognize and congratulate members of the Shaklee family for their successes and achievements, according to a press release.

The release said Shaklee chose to host its annual conference in New Orleans this year to help revitalize tourism in the recovering city. Shaklee hosted the ‘‘Live Green, Make Green” event to provide a sustainable form of aid — the opportunity to earn an income — by coaching New Orleans residents in starting their own green businesses and giving them the tools they need to do get started.

‘‘I know that my clients and I can trust that Shaklee products are always safe, always work and are always green,” said Bertram Posey in the release. ‘‘Knowing that Shaklee is also dedicated to doing what’s right for people and our planet makes me feel fulfilled and motivated to share the opportunity for a healthier, better life with my friends and family.”

The Poseys started their natural health business 33 years ago.
