Cobb Island resident fined by state agency for alleged illegal-size pier

Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009

Carole J. Jurney of Cobb Island was fined $1,500 and was told to reduce the size of a pier platform being built on her property in June.

The Maryland Department of the Environment executed a settlement agreement June 26 to resolve alleged violations involving the construction of a pier platform on Jurney's property, according to MDE officials in a press release. The fine money was placed in the state's Tidal Wetlands Compensation Fund.

Calls to Jurney were not returned.

State law for erosion and sediment control requires that property owners obtain approval for a sediment control plan from a local soil conservation district before any land clearing, soil movement and construction of more than 5,000 square feet or 100 cubic yards is done for a project, according to the MDE. The plan must be implemented before construction and it must be maintained for the life of the project.

It is against the law to allow any soil or sediment to enter the waterways of the state or to place soil or sediment in a condition or location where it is likely to be washed into the water, according to the MDE.
