College fair slated for Sept. 22

St. Mary's public schools, in collaboration with Calvert public schools, St. Mary's Ryken High School, the College of Southern Maryland, and the St. Mary's County Library, will host the Southern Maryland College Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Hollywood Volunteer Firehouse. The first session is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the second session is 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Approximately 100 colleges and universities will be represented. College and university officials will be on hand to answer questions from students, parents and guardians concerning their schools. All college-bound students in the tri-county area, as well as those considering college, are encouraged to attend this event along with parents or guardians. Admission is free and more information is available from high school counselors or by contacting the St. Mary's department of student services and academic support at 301-475-5511, ext. 150.

Seminar for parents scheduled

Parents of children with a disability who have questions and concerns about preparing for the child's future can join Joann Wood, attorney at law, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Lexington Park library, as she addresses legal guardianship, power of attorney, and special needs trust funds as they relate to individuals with disabilities. This event is sponsored by the St. Mary's public school's Partners for Success Resource Center for Families and Schools. Registration for this free seminar is required. After-school program to start

The Carver Recreation Center 21st Century After School Program, a joint project of the St. Mary's County Department of Recreation and Parks and St. Mary's public schools will hold an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. to meet staff and volunteers. Participants will also be able to register for the after-school program, which will begin Sept. 28 at the Carver Recreation Center on Lincoln Avenue in Lexington Park. The program will be open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. for grades kindergarten to 8 each week during the remainder of the school year. Students living in the Lexington Park and Park Hall communities may enroll.
