Gabrielle Cory, 12, a member of the Chaptico Chargers 4-H Club, helps restore and beautify the metal folding chairs used at the fairgrounds along with a crowd of other volunteers at the fairgrounds. Students at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center also participated in the painting project.

It was a painting project that was so much fun, the painters just kept going.

"It's an artistic happening," said Ann Richards.

Richards and others were repainting the dates on all the county fair signs that are set up along county roads this summer, in preparation for this year's county fair Sept. 24 to 27. They were having so much fun, the volunteers just kept painting once the signs were done. They turned to the scores of metal folding chairs used in the fairground's old auditorium and decided to restore and beautify them, too. Richards estimates that the chairs are probably about 50 years old — in good shape, just rusty.

For a period of about two weeks in July, a group of widely varied volunteers — "I just called anyone I thought would be interested in decorative painting," Richards said — met every morning to sand, prime and then let their imaginations go with colorful latex paints, decorating the chairs.

"We finished about 70 chairs," Richards said, describing the variety of themes and ideas the artists came up with.

Casey Page, the graphic arts teacher at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center and the chair of the fair's flower show this year, saw the chair project as a potential project for her students. So, when school started this year, the graphic arts students were asked to come up with some sketched designs for the fair chairs and the Richards delivered about 40 chairs to be restored. "The chair design project was perfect for my students," Page said in an e-mail. "They had to come up with four sketched designs. We discussed the designs and they chose the best."

All the newly decorated chairs will be used in the old auditorium at the fair. "They're very impressive as a group," Richards said.

Richards said they had so much fun with the chair project, she thinks they'll do it again next summer with about 100 more chairs that need some attention.
