Drivers should expect significant traffic delays Saturday when traveling through White Plains, Waldorf and areas north of Charles County because of funeral processions honoring emergency medical technician Tonya Mallard and retired Maryland State Police officer Stephen H. Bunker, who died in a helicopter crash last week, advise the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police.
Members of the CCSO traffic operations unit, Maryland State Police, Charles County Volunteer Fire and EMS and Prince George’s County Police, with assistance from the State Highway Administration and other police and fire agencies, will coordinate traffic flow. Motorists can expect traffic at all intersections along the funeral paths to be stopped temporarily as the motorcade escorts the processions through the area.
Mallard’s services begin at 9 a.m. at North Point High School at 2500 Davis Road in Waldorf. The funeral procession will start on Davis Road and travel to Berry Road, then Middletown Road, then Smallwood Drive. It will pass the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Station, Co. 12, on the way to U.S. 301 north, ending at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens at 200 E. Padonia Road in Timonium.
Services for Bunker start at 11 a.m. at South Potomac Church at 4915 Crain Highway in White Plains. The procession will immediately follow the services and will travel north on U.S. 301 to Branch Avenue. It will then travel from the Capital Beltway to Pennsylvania Avenue, ending at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland.
In addition, the parking lot at South Potomac Church will be closed on Oct. 3 and 4. Motorists who use the lot as a commuter parking lot will have to park at a different location on those days.
