Northern graduate Sean Schaefer holds nearly every major passing record for Towson University.

Former Northern High School athletes Sean Schaefer (Dunkirk) and Katie Ogden (Owings) are having stellar fall seasons for Towson University. Each has been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association for top-notch performances.

Schaefer, a former Calvert County offensive player of the year for the Patriots, is in his third year as Towson’s starting quarterback. He’s on course to become the Tigers’ all-time career leader in practically every passing category. He has already established himself as one of the CAA’s premiere quarterbacks.

This past week Schaefer set program records for most consecutive completions (15) and completion percentage (.879) when he completed 29 of 33 attempts for 287 yards and two touchdowns to rally Towson to a 23-21 upset of 14th-ranked Richmond. He was 18 for 18 passing for 208 yards in Towson’s three touchdown drives on the day. His most impressive stat came in the game’s final drive, as he went 4 for 4 for 67 yards on a drive that started with just 22 seconds left in the game. The Tigers’ game-winning drive ended on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Schaefer to Demetrius Harrison as time expired.

For that performance Schaefer was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week. He was also recognized as The College Sporting News’ National Player of the Week.

‘‘Sean is a gifted, talented quarterback,” Towson head football coach Gordy Combs said. ‘‘He’s also an excellent leader, which is why he’s one of our captains even though he’s only a junior.”

In his college career, Schaefer has thrown for 7,211 yards and 48 touchdowns.

Towson plays host to Hofstra this Saturday in Johnny Unitas Stadium in the Tigers’ annual homecoming. The game is being televised on Comcast SportsNet at 3:30 p.m.

Ogden, Northern’s 2006-07 female athlete of the year, has had an immediate impact on Towson’s cross country team. She has placed first in all four meets this fall.

‘‘We knew Katie was going to be good,” Towson head cross country coach Roger Erricker said. ‘‘We just didn’t realize she’d be this good.”

Her collegiate debut was an impressive one as she finished second overall in the 25th Annual Baltimore Metro Meet with a time of 18 minutes 38 seconds for the 5K course. It was the fourth-fastest time ever by a Towson runner on the Tigers’ Oregon Ridge Park course.

The following week, in intense heat, Ogden was the only runner in a field of 114 participants to finish in less than 19 minutes as she won the Towson Invitational individual title in a time of 18:47.

She has also led Towson to the Don Cathcart Salisbury Invitational team title and a fourth-place finish at the Delaware Invitational behind Villanova, Penn and the home-standing Blue Hens.

The Tigers are back in action Saturday when they travel to Delaware for a second invitational hosted by the Blue Hens.
