BUZZ on BUSINESS

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009

Real estate agent Harry Shasho and his wife, Mary, have formed Shasho Consulting Commercial Real Estate, a commercial brokerage with sales, leasing, consulting and land development of retail, office and industrial properties in Southern Maryland.

Harry Shasho has been selling and leasing commercial real estate since 1988 and has more than $300 million in sales and leasing over his career, according to a release.

Joining the company as sales managers are son Chris Shasho and Mark Larner, both veteran commercial agents, as well as administrative assistant Kathleen Degitz.

"The timing was right," Harry Shasho said in a release. "I felt I could better serve customers and clients with a smaller, hands-on company."

Shasho is a past president of the Charles County Chamber of Commerce and is the Charles County member at-large for the executive board of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.

A Charles County resident since 1976, Shasho resides in La Plata with his wife of 36 years.

Shasho Consulting is now at 401 Post Office Road in Waldorf, but by the end of the year will move to the White Plains Corporate Center on U.S. 301.

Maryland's tax amnesty program

Senate approves funds for military installations

The Department of Defense fiscal 2010 funding bill puts $6.5 million in the federal checkbook to support the work of Patuxent River Surface and Aviation Interoperability Laboratory and Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center in Southern Maryland, according to a press release.

The legislation, which passed the Senate last week, funds the Department of Defense and provides equipment and funding for the operations of the military.

This year's bill includes $5 million to upgrade the Pax River facility with the Navy's "ship self-defense system." This will allow for a wider range of simulations for ships and airplanes tested there, improving the interoperability of Navy's aircraft carrier battle groups' communications systems, according to a release.

The bill also includes $1.5 million to create a technology transfer office between the Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center and federal, state and local partners in Maryland. This office will help local organizations access available technology that may be used in commercial applications. The office will be at Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center on the Naval Support Facility, Indian Head.

11 HD channels launched in Charles, St. Mary's

Comcast introduced 11 new high-definition television channels in Charles and St. Mary's counties earlier this month, according to a release, including Headline News, ESPNU and MSNBC.

The new stations follow the launch of 35 new stations for area customers in August.

The change is part of Comcast's "World of More" digital upgrade program, which arrived in Charles and St. Mary's counties this summer.

As part of the initiative, Comcast moved some of its analog channels to digital format to free up bandwidth on its network.

"World of More" will also enable Comcast to further expand its signature On Demand service.
