NEWS OF NOTE

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009

The Friends of Old Waldorf School Foundation and the Ballet Arts Academy at the Old Waldorf School will hold the third annual School Dayz dinner and dance from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Nov. 6.

The fundraiser will be held at the Jaycees center at 3090 Crain Highway in Waldorf.

The event will feature dinner, a ballet presentation, hobby horse races, silent auction, 50/50 raffle and a reverse drawing with a top prize of $1,000.

Proceeds will help the FOWS and BAA with ongoing renovation efforts, operation/maintenance costs, ballet scholarships and programs for the community to enjoy at Old Waldorf School. In addition to the ballet academy, Old Waldorf School houses the Waldorf Head Start Program, operated by the Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee. The academy provides training in classical ballet.

Organizers point out that there are several ways to help make the event a success: become a sponsor, advertise in the souvenir program booklet, contribute an item to the silent auction, buy a horse in advance for the FOWS/BAA version of hobby horse races and purchase a ticket. Tickets are $60 per person which includes dinner and a chance to win the top prize in the reverse drawing.

Seasonal flu vaccinations will cost $30 per dose, pneumonia vaccinations will be $50 and vaccines for H1N1 are expected by mid-October, with the cost to be determined. Cash, check and credit/debit cards are accepted for payment, and Medicare and some private insurance will be accepted.

Sweet treats for a good cause

Few things are better than eating chocolate, but one of them is when you get to do it for a good cause. The Maryland Crime Victims' Resource Center will offer the opportunity at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at its annual Chocolate Affair at Florian Hall at 13701 Jericho Park Road in Bowie.

Once a year, MCVRC makes a concerted effort to raise funds so the organization can continue to advocate for victims' rights as well as provide direct services to victims. People can make a difference in the lives of crime victims and their families who depend upon MCVRC's services by either becoming an event sponsor, making donations to the cause or just by attending.

For the past 27 years, Roberta and Vince Roper, founders of MCVRC, transformed a grass roots organization into one of the leading victim advocacy organizations in the country, according to a press release.

Tickets will be $50 per person, $25 of which is tax deductible. Call 301-952-0063 or go to www.mdcrimevictims.org.

Museum publishes book

The Calvert Marine Museum announced it has published a book on building and the builders of wooden boats in Southern Maryland.

"Boats for Work, Boats for Pleasure: The Last Era of Wooden Boatbuilding in Southern Maryland" was written by Richard J. Dodds, curator of maritime history, and Robert J. Hurry, museum registrar.

The book is for sale in the museum store for $19.95. Call Dodds at 410-326-2042, ext. 31 or Hurry at 410-326-2042, ext. 35.

Building wooden boats in Southern Maryland is a tradition that goes back almost four centuries. Today, the art and skill of building wooden boats has almost died out in the region. The book serves as an overview of the last generation of wooden boatbuilding, a period of about 70 years from the 1930s until the first years of the 21st century.
