ANNAPOLIS — The state Board of Public Works recently approved $1.4 million for open space projects in all three Southern Maryland counties.
The three-member panel comprised of Gov. Martin O'Malley (D), Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot (D) and Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp (D), voted to purchase a 108-acre wooded tract in Nanjemoy that will become a new community park. Charles County will receive $605,400 to acquire the parcel adjacent to Doncaster State Forest.
The board, which oversees all state procurements, approved a $425,000 grant to St. Mary's County for new equipment and renovations at regional parks in Great Mills and Leonardtown.
Calvert County got $365,900 for three projects: $200,000 to build a playground and picnic area at Solomons Town Center Park, $107,940 to refurbish and expand the Dowell Elementary School playground and $57,960 to construct a scenic overlook of wetlands and the Chesapeake Bay in North Beach.
"Through these grants, funded from a percentage of real estate transfer taxes, we are enhancing the quality of life for Maryland's working families by improving access to our local parks, increasing opportunities for young people to play outdoors and preserving the natural beauty of landscapes in neighborhoods across our state," O'Malley said in a news release.
