Lackey student out sews the competition

Kirsten Smith, of Port Tobacco recently won a grand prize in a sewing competition at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Chantilly, Va.

She attended classes on various aspects of sewing, such as designer finishes, construction techniques and dress draping.

A tradeshow featured the latest in sewing machine technology, gadgets and notions, unique fabrics and tools. As part of the expo, Kirsten competed in the Sew Sweet Competition, sponsored by the American Sewing Guild. Sew Sweet is a fashion show and sewing competition for young sewing enthusiasts 9 to 18.

She modeled an outfit she made, including a lined hoodie with zipper, jeans, top and a purse.

Kirsten won the $75 grand prize in the 14 to 18 category.

She has won several online competitions for fashion design and sewing as well. Kirsten also won several first-place blue ribbons at this year’s Charles County fair, competing in the adult division.

She won first-place ribbons for two purses, a pair of pants and a hoodie.

Kirsten is a senior at Henry E. Lackey High School. She plans to pursue a degree in fashion design.
