The Calvert County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will celebrate 75 years of service to Calvert County with a fall luncheon at noon Nov. 7 at the Rod 'N' Reel Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach.
The national group is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and the local branch will use the luncheon to celebrate that milestone, as well. Branches across the country have been celebrating the 100th anniversary of the NAACP since January and throughout the year, according to a press release. The centennial was really celebrated in New York City in July where the organization had its annual convention.
"We here in Calvert County are continuing to celebrate the centennial as well as our service for 3/4 of a century," said Joyce Freeland, president of the branch, in the release.
The NAACP was founded in New York on Feb. 12, 1909, by a group of concerned citizens, black and white, representing a variety of civic and religious organizations who were outraged at the lynchings of blacks that were taking place in this country, the release said. Feb. 12, President Abraham Lincoln's birthday, was chosen to begin the NAACP campaign. The founders decided that the same day would be effective for a national conference.
During the Calvert NAACP celebration, members will discuss genealogy and researching family history.
"We are encouraging members and the community to take part in this important activity for their family's sake," Freeland said in the release. "We will have some of them to share with us what they have done. We will also be honoring some of our past branch officers of this great organization."
Tickets to the event are $40 each and can be purchased by calling Freeland at 410-535-0413, Ruth Reid 410-535-2730 or Cora Drumgo at 410-535-2506.
