Government offices to be closed

St. Mary's County government offices and all three St. Mary's County libraries will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. The St. Andrew's Landfill and six convenience centers and the St. Mary's Transit System will be open and operating normal business hours on Wednesday, Nov. 11. All senior activity centers and the Vivian Ripple Adult Day program will be closed on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11 and there will be no Meals on Wheels delivery.

Disabilities awards given

The St. Mary's County commissioners and the commission for people with disabilities gave out awards last week to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Pam Veitch won the volunteer award. Bert's Restaurant won for notable employer award. Kitty Parlett won the facility accessibility award. Don and Cindy Geller won the innovative program award. Barry Burris and Angela Cummings both won for outstanding person with disability award and Cheryl Blazer won the outstanding individual achievement award.

Historic preservation awards given

The St. Mary's County Historic Preservation Commission gave two awards last week for outstanding historic preservation. The recognized projects were a waterwheel at Cecil's Mill in Great Mills and a chapel building in Leonardtown. J. Allan Cecil II, J. Allan Cecil III and Matthew Cecil were awarded for their restoration work of the 1870s waterwheel at Cecil's Mill. Phil Dorsey III was awarded for renovating St. Peter's Chapel after purchasing it from the Episcopal Diocese in 1987.

Commissioners to hold public hearings on growth plan

The St. Mary's County commissioners are holding two more public hearings on the comprehensive growth plan update. Hearings will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Cole Cinema at St. Mary's College of Maryland and on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Northern Senior Activity Center in Charlotte Hall. The revised public hearing document is posted to the county's Web site at www.stmarysmd.com. Click on land use and growth management under the services box, then click on public hearing documents.

Print copies are available at the three county libraries and the public information office on the third floor of the Potomac Building in Leonardtown.

Memory screening to be offered at two senior centers

The Loffler Senior Activity Center and Northern Senior Activity Center will serve as screening sites for the National Memory Screening Program sponsored this month by the Alzheimer's Foundation.
