Large health refund given back to St. Mary's
St. Mary's County government got back $1,245,204 this year in unused health costs from Care First Blue Cross Blue Shield. Sue Sabo, director of human resources, said $115,000 goes back to the St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission and $25,000 goes to the library board's employees.
The end result for county government employees is they health insurance premiums will not be deducted from their paychecks for the last pay period this month and all of December.
"County employees, they receive health benefits but they didn't abuse them," said Commissioner Daniel H. Raley (D).
"In essence they'll have four pay periods they don't have to pay their insurance premiums," Sabo said.
"The reality is our employees earned this by doing the right thing, being health conscious," said Commissioner Larry Jarboe (R).
Government offices to be closed for Veterans Day
St. Mary's County government offices and all three St. Mary's County libraries will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. The St. Andrew's Landfill and six convenience centers and the St. Mary's Transit System will be open and operating normal business hours on Wednesday, Nov. 11. ll senior activity centers and the Vivian Ripple Adult Day program will be closed on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11 and there will be no Meals on Wheels delivery.
Representatives from the Social Security Administration will not be available at the College of Southern Maryland on Nov. 11. They will return Wednesday, Dec. 9.
