Loffler senior center to host Veterans Day event Nov. 10

To honor all veterans, active duty and former service members, the Loffler Senior Activity Center invites everyone, especially veterans, to gather for its Veterans Day Circle Celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 10, beginning at 10 a.m.

This tribute to those who have served our country and those who serve today will include ceremonies, poems and stories about veterans as well as patriotic and military music played by Mildred Wirth. Veterans are asked to wear their ribbons (and their uniform if they wish).

A continental breakfast will begin at 10 a.m.; opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $2 for civilians; free for veterans and active duty service members. To reserve a spot, call 301-737-5670, ext. 1655, indicating at that time if you are a veteran.

Housing Expo set for Nov. 13

A Housing Expo will be held Nov. 13 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Northern Senior Activity Center in Charlotte Hall. Designed for seniors or family members of a senior interesting in learning about housing options available in the tri-county area, this event will feature senior housing providers from the tri-county area will have information on the services and facilities they offer for both independent and assisted living.

Garvey senior center to host staff-prepared breakfast

The Garvey Center staff will host a staff-prepared breakfast on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 9:30 a.m. The staff will serve scrapple, scrambled eggs, toast, juice and coffee. Cost is $2. Call 301-475-4200, ext. 1050, to make reservations by Friday, Nov. 6.

Program to focus on Native Americans before the colonists

The Hands-on History Series will feature "Native Americans before the Colonists" on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Northern Senior Activity Center in Charlotte Hall. Participants will have the chance to learn about the history and traditions of Native Americans who lived by the shores of the Chesapeake Bay region. This presentation will feature the daily lives of the Native Americans who were members of the Piscataway Nation. Walk-ins are welcome.

Boost brain power

Because November is National Alzheimer's Awareness Month, the Health Watch topic for the month at the Loffler Senior Activity Center is "Improve Your Brain Power." On Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m., presenters will focus on ways seniors can improve their memory and exercise their brain. The presentation will include information on diet, exercise and brain games. Thanksgiving holiday inspires special meal at Northern

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, at noon, a special meal inspired by the Thanksgiving holidays — turkey pot pie, home-style green bean casserole, cornbread, apple cobbler, cranberries and more — will be served at the Northern Senior Activity Center in Charlotte Hall. Participants are asked to sign up for lunch by noon Monday, Nov. 9. The cost for lunch is a donation for seniors 60 and older and $5 for those younger than 60. There will also be a basket for collecting any donations participants would like to bring in for a needy family. Lunch reservations may be made by calling 301-475-4002, ext. 1001, or stop by the center to sign up.
