Stanley Leo Kingsbury, 84, died Nov. 2, 2009, at his daughter's home in Chesapeake Beach.
He was born Aug. 25, 1925, in Washington, D.C.
He was raised in the District and graduated from Anacostia High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 until his discharge in 1946 as a quartermaster third class.
He served aboard the destroyer escort USS Stern, and was awarded the European, Pacific and American Theater ribbons, and the WWII Victory Medal.
He married Dorothea Kingsbury on Aug. 26, 1949, and they lived and raised their family in the Washington, D.C., area until moving to North Beach in 2006.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 9619, Capitol Heights, where he served as post commander in 1973 and took care of memorials for fellow members.
He was also a member of the American Legion and the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum.
He was a Washington Redskins fan and enjoyed playing golf.
He also worked taking care of the grounds at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothea; sons, Ronald Kingsbury and his wife Kay of North Beach, Richard Kingsbury of Naples, Fla., Bradley Kingsbury of Owings, and Brian Kingsbury of Chesapeake Beach; daughter, Donna McNally and her husband Michael of Chesapeake Beach; twin daughters, Janice Frederickson of North Beach and Joyce Johnson and Jeff of La Plata; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 6, at Mt. Harmony United Methodist Church in Owings.
Interment will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham.
