Members of the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services and the organization's auxiliary invite the public to celebrate the dedication of the organization's new firehouse and several pieces of equipment at 2 p.m. Nov. 15 on the island.
The fire station is at 17069 Cobb Island Road and the ceremony will include the dedication of a rescue engine, fire engine and two ambulances, said Cindy Pilkerton, president of the Cobb Island VFD and EMS Auxiliary.
An open house offering tours of the new fire station, and light refreshments will follow the dedication ceremony, Pilkerton said.
"We've waited a long time for this," she said, adding that the department started running calls from the new station this week. "We're very excited to finally have the fire station opened."
Will Lawman, Cobb Island's deputy EMS chief, said plans to build the station have been under way since he joined the department 15 years ago.
"I'm glad to see that it's finally come to life," he said. "It's definitely going to help us serve the citizens of our area."
Lawman said the old fire department on Main Avenue will be demolished to make way for the construction of an overflow parking lot for the new fire station which will also be used for community meetings and special events.
