On Nov. 23, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Chesapeake is holding a fundraiser for SMILE Ecumenical Community Outreach in Lusby.

Recently, UUCC's youth outreach group made bowls for the fundraiser and will prepare soup to be served in the dishes, according to a church press release. The soup will be served at 11:30 a.m. after the 10 a.m. service at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California. The project, dubbed the Empty Bowl Harvest, called for the teens to create and glaze pottery bowls with food-safe glaze under the watchful eye of ceramic artist and teacher Alice Yuzty and youth outreach facilitator April Tucker. Individual soup bowls may purchased for donations of $10 to $20 per bowl. Canned and dry goods will also be accepted for distribution at SMILE at the Empty Bowls Harvest.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Chesapeake is a new congregation promoting opportunities for liberal religious growth. The church's mission is to create a spiritual environment for people of diverse cultural, ethnic, racial, economic and religious backgrounds. The church's goal is to understand, respect, appreciate and love one another as well as a commitment to social justice and our environment, according to the release. UUCC meets Sunday at 10 a.m. from September through June at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, 44219 Airport Road in California. For more information, call 301-880-0508, e-mail board chairwoman Linda Bodycomb at pres@theuucc.org or go to www.theuucc.org.
