La Plata police receive federal grant

Friday, Nov. 13, 2009

The La Plata Police Department has received a federal grant to purchase computer software that will enable officers to complete reports in their cruisers after responding to incidents in town.

The police department received a $19,304 grant under the Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive grant program that is administered by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance to do the project, said La Plata Police Chief Casey Gittings. The grant program provides resources to improve the capacity of state and local criminal justice systems.

The software will allow the department's 15 officers to finish incident reports on laptop computers that they carry with them in their cruisers so they don't have to go back to the police station on La Grange Avenue to do the task, Gittings said.

The laptops were purchased last year with about $180,000 in federal grant funding, the chief said.

"It will keep more of our officers on the street because there will be less down time that they have to spend in the station," he said.
