Hughesville man arrested at St. Mary's County bank
A Hughesville man was charged with cashing stolen checks after being arrested in Charlotte Hall on Nov. 10, according to Maryland State Police.
At 8:36 a.m., trooper first class J.R. Stern went to the PNC bank on Oak Station Road after hearing that someone was being detained for passing stolen checks. Stern contacted a bank employee who said Shawn Montgomery Beach, 52, of Hughesville, was trying to cash stolen checks, police reported.
Beach had already cashed checks totaling more than $1,400, according to police.
He was arrested and taken to the St. Mary's County jail, where he was charged with uttering bad checks, theft less than $100 and forgery.
Beach was detained at the St. Mary's County jail pending a bond review with the district court commissioner.
Authorities investigate Bryans Road closet fire
Deputy state fire marshals are investigating a small blaze inside a furnace closet in Bryans Road on Nov. 12, according to a report.
The owner of the three-story townhome on Longbow Court reported the fire, which had been doused by a sprinkler system, at about 11:30 a.m., the report showed.
Twenty members of the Bryans Road and Potomac Heights volunteer fire departments responded. The fire caused about $3,000 worth of damage, according to the report.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
