Leadership group gets donation

The Leadership Southern Maryland Board of Directors announced that the Dominion Foundation has awarded a $5,000 "visionary" gift to the LSM Leadership Circle — the first in the recently launched LSM giving campaign.

The gift was presented during an orientation kickoff reception held in September at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons.

"Dominion has long invested in communities where we have a presence through programs, volunteer activities and charitable giving," said Michael D. Frederick, director of LNG operations at Dominion's Cove Point liquefied natural gas facility in Lusby, in a press release. The foundation is the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources.

"We hope that this contribution will assist LSM in continuing its mission to build a strong network of graduates who seek to bring long-term benefit to their neighbors and region. For this reason we are pleased to present the first visionary gift to the LSM Leadership Circle," Frederick said in the release.

"We are gratified that Dominion chose to support LSM's future and the vision of collaborative leaders across Southern Maryland working together to enrich our communities and the lives of our neighbors," Dolores Martin, president of LSM, said in the release

"Through their contribution, LSM hopes to carry out Dominion's goal to work within the local community," Karen Holcomb, LSM executive director, said in the release. "This contribution goes towards program planning to help educate LSM graduates about regional issues. Program planning is critical in carrying out our mission to build a cadre of informed leaders to address common issues. We sincerely thank Dominion for their commitment to the region and LSM."

Martial arts students support effort to ‘Knock Out Hunger'

Waldorf Action Martial Arts at 2745 Old Washington Road has teamed up with KOHunger.com, a national coalition of martial arts schools that are committed to help end hunger in their own communities. Residents of Waldorf are being encouraged to make donations with an offer of a free week of martial arts classes for any resident who donates dry or canned goods at Waldorf Action Martial Arts during the food drive.

The offer is good until Nov. 21 as the martial arts school's students make the final push in their efforts to collect food for needy area residents during this exceptionally tough holiday season, according to a press release.

Those who make donations can redeem their free week of classes for any program, any time before Jan. 30.

Waldorf Action Martial Arts offers classes for all ages.

"We saw what KO Hunger was doing, and we knew it was for a good cause and decided to help," school owner Roger Cavanaugh said in the release.

"We encourage our students to be involved in volunteering in the local community, as well as in supporting local charities. With the economy the way it is right now, we're more than happy to lend a hand to those in need."
