The Twin Beach Players are gearing up for "Babes in Toyland," which starts this weekend.

The Twin Beach Players are gearing up for their presentation of "Babes in Toyland," starting this weekend at the Holland Point Civic Center.

The play is set at Toyland in the North Pole, a magical Christmas town inhabited by classic nursery rhyme characters. Mother Hubbard is having a difficult time covering her rent and the crooked Master Barnaby demands the hand of her daughter, Contrary Mary, to cover it. Legendary characters Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum come to her rescue with the help of Boy Blue, Little Miss Muffet, Georgy Porgy and more.

Regan Cashman, producer for the TBP, said the choice of show this year had to do with wanting something a little different.

"We've been doing ‘A Christmas Carol' for 10 years," she said, so "Babes" gave the group a new experience and a way to incorporate more families because the show calls for so many children. Cashman said there are 24 kids between ages 5 and 17 in the show.

She also said that with such a costume-involved show, costume expert Dawn Dennison deserves major kudos for her work.

"Most [of the costumes] are completely from scratch," Cashman said. "It's been a labor of love for Dawn, who has been attending rehearsals, measuring and sewing like crazy. It's been a lot of fun for the kids. They feel like superstars."

Evening performances are planned for 7 p.m. Nov. 27 and 28 and Dec. 4, 5 and 11. Afternoon performances will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, 12 and 13.

The Holland Point Civic Center is at 919 Walnut Ave. in Holland Point.

Tickets will be sold at the door half and hour before showtime and are $10 for general admission, $8 for students, seniors, military and TBP members. Groups of 10 or more can get tickets for $7 each.

Involved parents sought

The Maryland State Department of Education and Comcast are looking for nominations for the third annual Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Awards.

The award honors parents and legal guardians who have made contributions to public education and improved the school system.

Last May, James Carroll of Prince Frederick made it to the finals of the competition.

The award was developed to spotlight parents who have been significantly involved in communications, volunteering, learning, decision making and community collaboration, according to a press release from Comcast.

Nominees must be parents or legal guardians of children attending Maryland public schools, and cannot be employees of Comcast, MSDE, or the Maryland public school system. Twenty four semifinalists will be selected - one parent from each of the 23 Maryland counties and one from Baltimore City. Of the semifinalists, five finalists and one statewide winner will be named at an award celebration hosted by Comcast in the spring of 2010.

Nomination forms are available and can be downloaded at www.MarylandPublicSchools.org/pima. Nominations must be postmarked by Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

Breakfast celebrates Mentoring Month

The Calvert County Mentoring Partnership is hosting its Fifth Annual National Mentoring Month Breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Jan. 28 at Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick.

Jim Hitchcock, owner of Southern Maryland Auto & Insane Exhaust and a previous Job Shadow Day host, will be the honorary chair at this free networking event. The event will feature highlights from successful mentoring programs, testimonials from local mentors, and information on how to get involved. Individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and local nonprofit organizations can all help increase the number of mentors in the county.

The mentoring breakfast is being planned in observance of National Mentoring Month 2010, a month-long campaign dedicated to recruiting caring mentors for America's youth.

If your organization offers a mentoring program that you wish to feature at a booth at the Mentoring Breakfast, e-mail Nadine Happell at nhappell@gscnc.org.

"One person can change the future of a child simply by expanding their horizons. If you want to learn what you can do to become involved in mentoring, this is a great place to start," said Lorraine Joyner, chair of the Calvert County Mentoring Partnership.

To RSVP for the free National Mentoring Month Breakfast, or to sponsor the event on behalf of a business or organization, contact Joyner at the Calvert County Family Network at 410-414-5997 or by e-mail at joynerlr@co.cal.md.us.
