A man was arrested and charged with robbing the Sunderland Wine and Spirits store on Dec. 2, after he was pulled over by Calvert County Sheriff's Office deputies on Dec. 3.
The deputies saw a vehicle matching the description given by a witness and stopped the car.
The driver of the vehicle, Lewis Charles Johns, 45, of Chesapeake Beach was arrested for DUI and driving with a suspended license. After an investigation was charged with armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, theft and false imprisonment in connection with the store robbery, a Calvert County Sheriff's Office press release stated.
An employee at the Dalrymple Road store reported to Det. Michael Mudd on Dec. 2 that at about 5 p.m. a gray-bearded white male between 30 and 50 years old pulled out a knife and forced him to hand over an undisclosed amount of cash. The employee described the robber as 5-feet 7-inches to 6 feet in height, about 190 pounds and dressed in blue jeans, a blue hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses when he entered the store, according to the press release.
A witness at the scene was able to record a partial license plate number and gave a description of the vehicle in which the suspect fled as a dark colored sedan.
On Dec. 3 at 8 p.m., Dfc. Michael Naecker and Deputy Andre Mitchell conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched the description given from the armed robbery.
According to the press release, when Johns was questioned during his initial arrest, Mudd arrived and questioned Johns, and the resulting investigation and interview led Mudd to charge Johns with the robbery-related charges.
