Waldorf resident Marlene A. Cleaveland has joined the Charles County Literacy Council as program coordinator.
Cleaveland brings with her a background in management and marketing as a paralegal and legal analyst for the federal government, according to Sonja L. Scharles, president of the council’s board of directors.
No stranger to the nonprofit world, Cleaveland has also volunteered as a counselor at the Catherine Foundation, as vice president for a homeowners association and in other community endeavors.
She is also a trained tutor for the literacy council, enhancing her ability to coordinate the myriad programs of the council, Scharles said in a press release.
The council trains tutors and provides free one-on-one adult tutoring in reading, writing and basic mathematics to ensure that all adults realize their potential as individuals, parents and citizens.
In October, the council graduated 13 tutors from its semi-annual tutor training workshops. The next workshop will be held in the spring.
The council can be reached at 301-870-5974, by e-mail at ccliteracy@ccboe.com or at www.CharlesCountyLiteracy.org.
