School system planning appeal of state's edict on high school

Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009

Charles Wineland, assistant superintendent for supporting services, told the Charles County Board of Education last week that after requesting fiscal 2011 state planning and construction approval for the new high school planned on Piney Church Road in Waldorf, the Interagency Committee on School Construction recommended that if plans go forward for the high school it would seat 1,100 students as opposed to the 1,600 requested.

Wineland told school board members that school system staff appealed the recommendation Nov. 23 and the system is awaiting word. The IAC did not approve construction, and Wineland said this, too, would be appealed during the next available round of appeals.

Additional projects presented for 2011 included kindergarten additions at Eva Turner, Indian Head and Arthur Middleton elementary schools and renovations at Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary and John Hanson Middle School.

School staff is analyzing recommendations from the IAC on those projects.

Resources for students go beyond books

Judy Estep, assistant superintendent, and other department of instruction employees last week presented to the school board an update of library resources available to students at school and from home through the Internet using a password.

From any computer with access to the Internet, students can access 17 different resources including science, English and social science databases, encyclopedias and newspaper databases with articles dating back to the 1800s.

According to the report, the resources, which are aligned to national and state curriculum standards, are available for student and teacher use.

The resources provide primary and secondary sources for teachers and students in a variety of different media formats, according to the presentation.

Kyle Grusholt, student representative for the board of education, thanked those who presented Tuesday and said he and many students have used the resources and find them very helpful.
