IT firm contributes to law enforcement academy
Outsource IT, a La Plata-based company that provides IT support services to small- and medium-sized businesses, recently donated new computer equipment to the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy.
The academy, located west of La Plata, provides entry-level and in-service training to police and correctional officers in Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's counties. Sheriffs Rex W. Coffey (D) of Charles County, Mike Evans (R) of Calvert County and Tim Cameron (R) of St. Mary's County accepted the donation from Craig Guice, CEO of Outsource IT.
The new computers will be used by officers training at the academy to complete classroom assignments and reports. Some of the computers will also be used by the instructors, who had been using outdated PCs before receiving the donation.
"On behalf of the sheriffs, our staff and the officers who attend the academy, I want to thank Outsource IT for improving our computer lab," said Lt. Ray Aportadera, commander of the academy. "Having access to more advanced technology will be of great benefit to the men and women we train to protect our communities."
Mirant wins award
Employees at Mirant Mid-Atlantic LLC's Morgantown Generating Station and Faulkner Ash Site received international recognition for their contributions to wildlife habitat conservation at the Wildlife Habitat Council's 20th annual symposium.
The Faulkner site contains 64 acres for active wildlife management. This includes a wet forest area, which the wildlife team has enhanced with 1,200 trees. The team also works with the Southern Maryland chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation to manage 44 acres as wild turkey habitat. Together with NWTF and a local 4-H club, the team holds an annual Wildlife Adventure Day.
