County gets funding for Gilbert Run Park

Friday, Dec. 19, 2008

The Maryland Board of Public Works approved Program Open Space funding this week for eight state park improvement projects in seven counties, including the renovation of Gilbert Run Park off Route 6 in Dentsville.

Charles County is set to receive $338,000 to renovate the park's visitor center, picnic pavilions and rest rooms, according to a Maryland Department of Natural Resources' press release.

Other jurisdictions set to receive funding include Allegany, Prince George's, Queen Anne's and Worcester County, the City of Aberdeen in Harford County and the city of Millington in Kent County.

In 2007, the state has preserved 10,251 acres of natural areas for public recreation and watershed and wildlife protection, according to the release. Since 1969, Program Open Space, administered under DNR, has protected 330,690 acres with funds from a percentage of the real estate transfer tax.

The department of natural resources manages more than 449,000 acres of public lands and 17,000 miles of waterways along with Maryland's forests, fisheries and wildlife for environmental, economic and quality of life benefits.
